Kyushu is one of the four main islands that makes up Japan, along with Hokkaido, Honshu, and Shikoku, and is the third largest of them. It is comprised of Fukuoka prefecture, Saga prefecture, Nagasaki prefecture, Kumamoto prefecture, Oita prefecture, Miyazaki prefecture, and Kagoshima prefecture. Kyushu is also the closest of Japan's main islands to continental Asia, and there has been active exchange between it and nearby countries since ancient times. The many volcanoes of Kyushu give rise to a large number of natural hot springs.
